Google Business Profile: 10 quick wins for more local calls

When someone searches for “plumber near me” or “Italian restaurant in Bristol”, the map and the business listings under it often get the attention before any website does. Those listings come from Google Business Profile. It is free, and a well-kept profile can bring in calls every week. Here are ten quick wins.
1. Claim and verify your profile
If you have not done this yet, start here. Search for your business on Google, choose to claim it, and follow the verification steps. Until it is verified, you cannot properly control what people see, and anyone can suggest changes.
2. Choose the right main category
Your primary category tells Google what you are, and it has a big effect on which searches you appear for. Pick the most specific option that fits, such as “Emergency locksmith service” instead of just “Locksmith” if that is your main work. Then add a few accurate secondary categories.
3. Fill in every field
Opening hours, service areas, services, a clear description, your website and booking link: complete profiles give Google more reasons to show you, and give customers fewer reasons to look elsewhere. Write your description for people first, and mention your main services and the areas you cover naturally.
4. Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly on your profile, your website, your social media and directories such as Yell or Checkatrade. Small differences, like “St.” on one site and “Street” on another, can make it harder for Google to trust which details are right.
5. Add real photos, and keep adding them
Show your work, your team, your premises and your vehicles. Real photos build far more trust than stock images, and fresh photos show that the business is active. Aim to add a few new ones every month.
6. Ask every happy customer for a review
Reviews are one of the strongest local signals, and they are what customers read before they call. Create your review link from your profile, put it in a short text message or email, and send it while the job is still fresh in the customer’s mind. Never offer incentives for reviews or write them yourself; it breaks Google’s rules and can get reviews removed.
7. Reply to every review, good and bad
A short, personal thank-you to good reviews shows you care. A calm, helpful reply to a bad one often impresses future customers more than the review itself puts them off. Never argue in public; offer to sort it out and take the details offline.
8. Post updates and offers
Use updates to share seasonal offers, new services, events or recent projects. They keep your profile looking active and give people one more reason to choose you over the listing next to yours.
9. List your products and services
Add each main service with a short description and, where it makes sense, a price or “from” price. This helps you appear for more specific searches and answers the questions people would otherwise phone to ask.
10. Keep holiday hours up to date
Few things annoy a customer more than driving to a closed shop because Google said it was open. Set special hours for bank holidays and Christmas in advance. Accurate information protects your reviews and your reputation.
Bonus: link it all up
Your profile works best when your website backs it up. A page for each main service and each area you cover, with the same contact details, helps Google connect the two and show you more often.
